My name is Frank Hernandez.

I was a florist for a few years, and I still love the industry, the variety, the people, being creative and putting smiles on people's faces when delivering arrangements, virtually being part of complete strangers' birthdays, weddings and other celebrations... There is so much more to being a florist than meets the eye.

It is a great profession, but as with all occupations, you do come across the odd problem every now and again, and stripping flowers is, by all accounts, a chore. It is messy, awkward, injury-prone, costly and inefficient. I thought that there must be a better way..

I enjoy solving problems, so after discussing various ideas with my brother Jose, a talented engineer, we came up with several drafts before we settled on this particular design. We made a dozen or so for our own use and evaluation and in no time at all, our staff had converted to the new tool, henceforth refusing to use anything else.

The device instantly proved very popular, durable, easy to use and economical, so we took it upon ourselves to fund the manufacture of several hundred units to take to the market and gauge a response. We walked the streets and sold these units to virtually every florist we visited. As soon as anyone saw how this tool worked and how easy it was to use, everyone we visited wanted one.

We still wanted further reassurance that we were on the right track, however, so we then booked a stand at the Melbourne Flower Show, equipped with a short video, an ample supply of flowers and about 1000 units for sale. Within that one weekend at the flower show we sold every D-Thorn tool we had.

We knew then that we had a useful, desirable product, and set about to market it to the world.
